REAL Debate competition Budapest Hungary

Welcome to the II. REAL Debate Competition! The competition is hosted by REAL School Budapest, an international primary school for sustainability and impact entrepreneurship.


The REAL Debate Competition is an English debate tournament in WSDC format for young people ages 12-16 years from all over the world. The competition is held in person in Budapest, Hungary.


When? Saturday, 27 April 2024, 9:00-19:00

Where? REAL School Budapest, Záhony utca 7. 1031 Budapest, Hungary

How? Please fill in the application form by Friday, 19 April 2024. Registration is open on a first-come-first-serve basis. We have room for 12 teams in total.




Registration fee:

You will get 10% off the registration fee if you sign up by 17 April 2024.

  • 1 team (3 debaters) + 1 observer: 37,000 HUF or 95 EUR

  • Any additional debater: 6,000 HUF or 15 EUR

  • Observer: 6,000 HUF or 15 EUR/person


All fees cover the event costs and include a 100% plant-based, nutritious, delicious warm lunch and an afternoon snack provided by The Planteen. In case the fee is a problem, fee assistance is available. For fee assistance, please get in touch with us at debate@realschool.hu.


Format:

REAL Debate competition will follow the World Schools debating championships (WSDC) format.

In the World Schools Debating Championships Format, a team comprises three to five people who prepare together. Three people speak in any given debate (though they can cycle who speaks between the rounds). 


The teams will be the Proposition and the Opposition, and each speaker will have six minutes to speak. During the second to the fifth minute of each speech, the speaker will also be open to questions or statements from the opposite team known as "Points of information." After the six speeches, each team will have the option to deliver a three-minute summary known as a reply speech.

II. REAL Debate theme

The first-round and third-round motion will be announced on the day, and the second-round motion and final-round motion will be announced to registered teams before the competition.


Main judges:

Debate judge Andras Meleg

András Meleg is a highly respected debate judge and the President of the Budapest Debate Club. He is known for his deep understanding of debate theory and ability to provide insightful and constructive feedback to debaters.




Debate judge Nihat Salamzade

Nihat Salamzade is a debater and debate judge from Azerbaijan and the President of the International Business School Budapest Debate Club. He brings a critical eye and a wealth of knowledge to the debate, ensuring that the debate is fair and the arguments are well-supported.



Debate judge Gareth Manning

Gareth Manning is a Canadian educator and debate judge at REAL School Budapest. He is well-versed in the rules and procedures of various debate styles and provides fair and objective evaluations of the debaters' performances.




debate judge Faruh Kuziev

Faruh Kuziev is representing the Tajikistan debate community. He took part in the debate world championship for students and won a series of national and regional debate tournaments. He has taught debates since 2010. Currently, Faruh teaches debates and public speaking at REAL School.
